“Loosely based on the story of Abraham Lester and his wife Lavinia, A Place of Our Own weaves a story of enslaved African Americans who escaped and for generation lived in the Great Dismal Swamp. The play is a combination of monologue, vignette, and song. It’s sometimes haunting, sometimes lively musical score was composed, performed, and recorded by Grammy-nominated producer Mark L. Carman, with script and songs written by Karen Washburn.”
